We Took The Scenic Route
Shortly after Wildebraam in Swellendam we turned onto a long and winding dirt road. We prefer taking the road less traveled, amazing what you find.
After a couple of turns, my husband was convinced we were lost, with only the sheep and the ostriches to ask for directions we decided to keep following the GPS.
We eventually reached our destination at the end of the yellow brick road
McGregor is a small little village just 20 min outside Robertson when you don’t take the scenic route. We stayed in the Sunflower Cottage, which is one of the oldest and most historic houses in the village. From there it was a short walk to all the lovely shops and restaurants which are all mostly pet friendly.
Sunflower Cottage has 2 lovely bedrooms, with a fully fenced outside area. Take a good book with and make use of the hammock outside on the stoep.
This is one of the first villages that we have come across where almost every shop and restaurant has a dog, we felt a bit out of place when we took a short walk without the dogs, but quickly went back to fetch them before going into the bar for a nice refreshing drink.
The poetry festival was on at the same time as our visit, unfortunately, we could not get any tickets on time, but we will make sure to book in advance next year.
The night was not enough for this little village, unfortunately, we did not try any of the hiking routes as we had to leave again early the next morning.
McGregor has so much to offer, from numerous hiking routes to wine tasting in Robertson, Ashton and surrounding areas you are spoilt for choice. If you are more of a trail runner or mountain biker then have a look at the run and ride to nowhere hosted here.
While in town be sure to make a turn at Bazaar for a nice slice of Cheesecake, and then to cool off after a long drive across the street is a very nice Boutique Qaragiste wine cellar, Bemind Wines.
We will definitely come back, the dogs loved the fact that they could go everywhere with us, even to breakfast.
