It’s Friday afternoon, the car is packed and we are ready to hit the open road. With just an hour and a half drive from Somerset West, we get to the most beautiful, peaceful little cottage on the Breede River.
I do not even know how to start describing this little piece of heaven, imagine no road-noise, all you can hear are the birds and horses in the distance. If you are looking for a place to get away from it all then this is it.
The little cottage has no electricity, but ample solar lights are provided and there are battery-operated lights inside.
A couple of high lights from the weekend apart from it being pet friendly, on Saturday while fishing an African Clawless Otter came to say Hello, unfortunately, we did not have our camera ready for this. To top this amazing experience on Sunday there was a fish eagle that went hunting right in front of us.
Do you’re self a favour and rent the little canoe for the weekend that is on offer, you can go in either direction and as soon you stop it is the most peaceful feeling, surrounded by the sound of birds singing. I could sit there for hours.
2 cottages are rented as 1 unit, in total sleeping 6 people.
There is a neat outside shower that caters for everyone (did not find any spiders their).
The fire pit in front is perfect from early morning fire to warm the toes to your braai and poitjie.
The dogs absolutely loved it here, from open space to the river, it is the best of both worlds. As a dog owner what really appealed to me was the fact that the cottage was separate, so I did not have to stress about my dogs bothering other people. They do stress that if you bring your dog’s with they are not allowed to wander, but the space between the cottage and the river was more than enough for my 3 to keep themselves busy. Morgan even went for a little row down the river with my husband.
We highly recommend Oryx Hut on Breede and you will not be disappointed.

On your drive back home why not do a little detour through Franschhoek for Lunch or Ice Cream
