Leg 5 – Silvermine to Cecilia Forest (Constantia Neck)

Today Bella and I had to pull our socks up to run with Regard instead of our usual running group.

The weather was perfect, a slight breeze at the start which did not last long, with the most amazing views throughout, not a cloud in sight.

We started at Silvermine, with a great run through the forest for about 2 km before hitting the mountain.  We had a short detour to Elephant eye cave (could not resist going to see the view), before starting our climb to Constantia Peak which was not that bad.

Once on top of Constantia Peak, we could see all the way over to Klein Leeu Kop, Suther Peak, and even Muizenberg Peak; it was great to be able to look back and see how far we’ve come.

After Constantia Peak it was downhill for quite a while, this helped us to make up time (while stressing that we are going down quite a bit and still have another peak to do).  Once down we quickly stopped by xxx restaurant to fill up our water as the heat was getting to us before carrying on to Klassenkop.

Klassenkop was a devil of a climb, extremely steep all the way from the road and never-ending.  Bella made it look so easy going up (having 4 legs instead of 2 definitely helps). Eventually after what felt like hours we got to the top.  To reach Klassenkop you need to climb through a tree to get to the spot.  Bella stayed behind by the tree as the drop was too risky.

The heat definitely got to all of us today.  On top of Klassenkop there were a couple of rock pools.  Bella found one her size and went for a quick lie down.

I always carry extra water in case there is not enough on the mountain.  I was lucky today as the mountain provided plenty for both of us.

After Klassenkop it was down to the car at Cecilia Forrest (or so we thought). We started going down and this is where our navigation started failing us.  We kept on losing the trail ending up bundu bashing down to find the trail and doing it all over again a few km later.  We can definitely say that this was an interesting day, Bella loved it and was more eager to tackle this leg than the 1 last week.

We ended on 23 km, Bella was buggered falling asleep in the uber back to silvermine.  We have 1 more peak left to do which is scheduled for next week.  We will start at Cecilia Forrest, tag Devils Peak, and end on Signal Hill.
