Profile
Traveling with a dog can be quite challenging, especially when you don’t have your own set of wheels. Cobalt and I flew to JHB from Cape Town for the Gauteng Agility Regional trials. Our challenge was how we would we be getting around once in JHB. I could not get a clear answer on the Uber website whether or not they are pet friendly. When renting a car, you also need to check if the company will be happy with a dog travelling in the car with you.
Hertz came to our rescue; they had no issue with Cobalt (who is the perfect passenger when it comes to travelling in a car), who could drive with me. He was very happy to jump into the back of the hatch-back and sit quietly looking out the window.
Things to keep in
mind when renting a car
- Always check with the rental company if they are happy with a dog in the car
- Try to protect the area the dog will be using. We used a nice blanket in the boot for Cobalt to lie.
- If you offer your dog water in the rental, make sure it’s a non-spill bowl
- If your dog sits on the back seat, try to use a pet-friendly seat belt so that the dog does not jump onto the front seat, which might not be protected.
Hertz went out of their way to make us feel welcome, from when we collected the car late at night at OR Tambo airport to dropping it off again on Monday Morning. I doubt I will look at any other means of travel again if Cobalt and I need to rent a car.
